Common Signs of Addiction
Even though different drugs have varying effects on overall physical and mental health, the basic pattern is the same. Getting and using the drug becomes more important than job, friends and family, many times making it difficult to function. Recognize the common signs of addiction.
Physical Signs
Change in sleeping patterns
Bloodshot eyes
Slurred or agitated speech
Sudden weight loss or gain
Skin abrasions/bruises
Neglected appearance/poor hygiene
Sick more frequently
Accidents or injuries
Mental & Emotional Signs
Hiding use, lying or covering up
Sense that the person will "do anything" to use again
Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
Emotional instability, hyperactivity
Depression
Missing work or school
Secretive behavior
Change in friends, clothing, appearance
Unusual smells on clothing or breath
Disappearances
